Secondary Treatment

Biological Treatment for the reduction of organic load and nutrients.

DEVISE uses two main biodegradation technologies:

  • MBBR-IFAS which is an effective high rate biodegradation technology and is incorporated in the design of prefabricated, compact DEVISE HIGH-RATE bio plants.
  • MBR technology which offers a high level of treatment, combining biological treatment + ultrafiltration (UF) + disinfection, is used in the prefabricated, compact DEVISE ULTRA-CLEAR bio plants.

Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor [MBBR]

Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) processes improve reliability, simplify operation, and require less space than traditional wastewater treatment systems.

This technology provides cost-effective treatment with minimal maintenance since MBBR processes self-maintain an optimum level of productive biofilm. Additionally, the biofilm attached to the mobile biocarriers within the system automatically responds to load fluctuations.

The MBBR-IFAS process has demonstrated reproducible success with biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) elimination, ammonia oxidation, and nitrogen removal applications, in a variety of different treatment configurations, aimed to meet a wide range of effluent quality standards, including stringent nutrient limits.

MBBR-IFAS advantages

Perhaps the most impressive aspect of the MBBR - IFAS process lies in its versatility, allowing creative solutions by design engineers. Specifically, the MBBR-IFAS process offers the following basic advantages in comparison with other more conventional wastewater treatment technologies:

  • Ability to increase capacity or improve performance by adding more media (high retrofit and/or upgrade potential)
  • Additional biomass for treatment without increasing the solids loading on final clarifiers
  • Higher-rate treatment processes possible, thus resulting to greater treatment in a significantly smaller footprint
  • Development of specialized biomass for carbon and nitrogen removal in multi-compartment reactor configurations
  • Improved settling characteristics (reduced SVI values)
  • Reduced sludge production
  • Improved recovery from process upsets

Membrane Bioreactor [MBR]

DEVISE ENGINEERING S.A. utilizes the immersed MBR (iMBR) process in its packaged Membrane-Operating Systems (MOS) which are designated for large-scale wastewater recovery applications, both municipal and industrial.

The iMBR is a wastewater treatment technology which combines a submerged membrane separation process (e.g. microfiltration/ultrafiltration) with a suspended growth bioreactor. All current MBR processes utilize the membrane as filter, almost completely rejecting the solid materials which are developed by the biological process, thus resulting in a clarified and disinfected product effluent. Water permeation is realized by means of a suction pump. The two main configurations of iMBR used for wastewater treatment today are hollow fiber (HF) and flat sheet (FS).

When used with domestic sewage and certain type of industrial effluents, the iMBR process can provide a substantially clarified and disinfected water stream of high enough quality to be discharged to sensitive receiving bodies or to be recovered and reused for such applications as field irrigation, toilet flushing, recharge of aquifers, or river flow replenishment. As a result, the iMBR process is increasingly becoming the technology of choice for wastewater applications where the aforementioned criteria hold true.

MBR advantages

  • High effluent quality, free of suspended and colloidal solids;
  • Effluent disinfection without the use of chemicals;
  • Effluent quality not affected by poor sludge settleability issues;
  • Independent control of hydraulic retention time (HRT) and sludge age (SRT);
  • High attainable biomass concentrations in the mixed liquor resulting in significant acceleration of the biodegradation mechanisms;
  • Low sludge production;
  • Reduced space requirements;
  • High retrofit and/or upgrade potential.
